Ductless Mini-Split System Basics
Both mini-split and multi-split systems are available as air conditioners only or as heat pumps that both heat and cool. A compressor located outside can run up to eight individual blower units depending on the brand and model. A small hole drilled through the wall allows a conduit containing refrigerant, condensate electrical lines to pass through. The conduit connects individual blower units to the compressor. Blower units are available as wall-, ceiling and floor-mounted options.
Because there are no ducts, there is no loss of energy, which makes these systems highly energy-efficient. The compressor can be placed away from the living space to reduce the noise of operation. Inside, the only sound is blowing air. Because rooms are not connected by ducts, airborne contaminants are not distributed throughout the living space.
Mini-Split Units
Mini-split units can be used to augment an existing ducted HVAC system or as the primary source for conditioned air in one or more rooms. If only one room is connected, it has its own climate controls. However, if several blowers are connected to a single compressor, one temperature control regulates all the spaces.
Multi-Split Units
Multi-split HVAC systems, often called zoned heating and cooling, can be customized according to the layout and size of the living space. Most importantly, the temperatures for each zone can be set independently, allowing greater flexibility in delivering customized indoor comfort to each area.
